IEPA Document Explorer

About Document Explorer

This tool provides immediate online access to hundreds of thousands of the Illinois EPA's public records that are maintained in digital format. Additional records are regularly added and made available through this access tool. EPA maintains available records primarily based upon the site/facility location. Through this tool, you should be able to search for locations of interest by:

  1. Name;
  2. Location address and/or program ID attributes; or
  3. A geographic mapping tool that assists in identifying over 200,000 locations currently known to EPA

Selected search results are summarized by records category and/or relevant program and the Bureau or media type. It is important to note that only records maintained in digital format are available through this access tool.

The following categories of records types that contain available records are:

  • Air Permits (construction and operating)
  • National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) water discharge permits
  • Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST)
  • Voluntary Site Remediation program records from 2004 to present
  • State Response Action technical documents
  • Final Compliance Commitment Agreements since January 1, 2014

Some Agency records are maintained in paper and/or microfilm. If you cannot find the records of interest, you should submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to access paper and microfilm records.
